Governor's Work Ethic Certificate Program (GWEC)

The GWEC is earned by students who are focused on the future. Implementing this certificate program at Decatur County Community Schools is just one of the many ways we are working to bridge the education we offer here to success after high school. This program will challenge students to work hard to prove themselves in many different areas. Certificates will be granted to students to achieve in the following nine components:

  • GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Attendance rate of 98% or higher
  • No more than one discipline referrals during the applicable school year
  • Friday Night School
  • Cell phone infraction is exempted if only one offense
  • At least six hours of community service
  • Perseverance and problem solving
  • Service of others, possess a positive attitude, and strong communication skills
  • Ability to be a self starter and critical thinker
  • Reliability, responsibility, and teamwork
  • Organization skills, importance of punctuality, and self-management

It is our belief that achieving at this level deserves some incentives from local businesses. We have been asking local businesses to help us show our young people how important learning these skills are to the workplace by offering incentives. Examples of possible incentives are listed below.

  • Guaranteed Job Interview
  • Applicant Pool Preference
  • Increased Base Pay
  • Professional Mentoring
  • Seminars/Professional Development
  • Bonus Vacation Day
  • Sign-on Bonus
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Health Club/Gym Membership
