MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF

THE BOARD OF SCHOOL TRUSTEES

DECATUR COUNTY COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

 

 

The Board of School Trustees met in regular session on Wednesday, November

 

9, 2011, at South Decatur Jr/Sr High School, 8885 South State Road 3, Greensburg,

 

Indiana 47240.

 

Board President Annette Geis called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.

 

Brent Muckerheide was absent.

 

Upon a motion made by Tim Roscoe and a second by Todd Mauer minutes

 

of meetings held October 12, 2011 were unanimously approved as mailed.

 

Payment of claims and payroll were ordered on a motion made by Chris

 

Owens, a second by Mark Young and passed unanimously.

 

On a motion by Matthew Hoeing and a second by Todd Mauer the following

 

field trip was unanimously approved.

South Decatur Jr/Sr High School National Honor Society

Louisville, KY – March 13 & 14, 2012

 

On a motion by Tim Roscoe and a second by Mark Young the following contract

 

was unanimously approved.

 

Beth Schwering – North Decatur Elementary

Medical Leave for Sam Field

 

 

 

 

Under new business, Dr. Roach requested approval of the 2012/2013, 2013/2014,

 

and 2014/2015 school calendars.  He stated that he worked with the teacher’s association

 

and that the proposed calendars closely follow Bartholomew Consolidated School

 

Corporation due to our students attending C4 vocational school.  On a motion by Mark

 

Young and a second by Todd Mauer, the calendars were unanimously approved.

 

A resolution authorizing the superintendent to provide any preliminary and final

 

notice of non-renewal and to conduct any first conferences of non-renewal as requested

 

in writing by non-permanent teachers was unanimously approved on a motion by Mark

 

Young and a second by Chris Owens.

 

Hal Kovert, Kovert Hawkins Architects, stated that the bid opening for North

 

Decatur Jr/Sr High School Project 7 was held at noon on November 2, 2011.  After

 

tabulating the bids and speaking with Dwight Salsbury of Ross Sinclair & Associates,

 

Mr. Kovert recommended to accept the base bid and lA: Single Bleachers submitted by

 

Poole Group for a total of $1,785,000.  A brief discussion was held regarding the single

 

bleacher and the two bleacher options.  Todd Mauer made a motion to approve Poole

 

Group for the Base Bid plus Alternate 1B: Two Bleachers for a total cost of $1,787,000.

 

Mark Young made a second to the motion and it was unanimously approved.

 

Mr. Kovert stated that the bid opening for the South Decatur Jr/Sr High School

 

Project 8 was held at noon on October 18, 2011.  After tabulating the bids and speaking

 

with Dwight Salsbury of Ross Sinclair & Associates, Mr. Kovert recommended to accept

 

the base bid, Alternate 1A: single bleachers and Alternate 3: Classroom B108 submitted

 

by Crane, Inc. for a total of $1,703,000.  Todd Mauer made a motion to approve Crane,

 

Inc. with the alternate bids as outlined by Mr. Kovert.  Matthew Hoeing made a second to

 

the motion and it was unanimously approved.

 

Dr. Roach requested approval of an additional class: Civil Engineering and

 

Architecture, to begin with the 2012/2013 school year.  On a motion by Chris Owens and

 

a second by Mark Young, the addition of the class was unanimously approved.

 

Disposal of obsolete equipment was unanimously approved on a motion by Chris

 

Owens and a second by Mark Young.

 

Dr. Roach asked the Board to approve an amendment for the Pension Protection

 

Act for Valic 401A and 403B Plan.  On a motion by Tim Roscoe and a second by Chris

 

Owens the amendment was unanimously approved.

 

In his report, Dr. Roach requested the technology assistant position be changed

 

from a 210 day contract to a 12 month employee.  This would allow vacation, sick and

 

personal days be available for this position.  On a motion by Chris Owens and a second

 

by Mark Young the requested change was unanimously approved.  Dr. Roach reported

 

that one of our buildings has recently gained thirteen special education students.  He

 

stated that there is a possibility that we may need to hire an additional special education

 

teacher.

 

In his report, Mike Wilcox thanked the Board for allowing him to attend the

 

Advanced Safety Training at Mexico Tech last week.  Mr. Wilcox stated that he will be

 

meeting with building administrators to discuss what he learned as well as what they had

 

learned at the local meeting.  He reported that this training allows him to teach the basic

 

program to our schools as well as surrounding schools.

 

Maintenance Director Don Lewellyn reported on maintenance work at all four

 

buildings.  He reported that the gym floor at North Decatur Elementary will be refinished

 

over Christmas Break and that the gym floor at South Decatur Elementary needed to be

 

completely redone.  Mr. Lewellyn asked for permission to purchase new floor cleaners

 

for both of the elementary schools due to the new flooring in the hallways.  On a motion

 

by Chris Owens and a second by Matthew Hoeing, permission to purchase the floor

 

cleaners was unanimously granted.

 

North Decatur High School principal Gary Cook reported on Acuity and End of

 

Course Assessment testing and recent teacher in-service.  He reported that he had met

 

with the guidance department to discuss curriculum changes and new class offerings.

 

Mr. Cook invited everyone to attend the Veteran’s Day program on Friday and mentioned

 

the recent Radiothon that raised $2,300 for the Haitian orphanage.  He reported that the

 

fall blood drive had been held last week and they had 61 accepted donations.

 

South Decatur High School principal Jim Jameson reported on teacher in-service,

 

last weeks “Don’t Text and Drive” campaign and next week’s anti-bullying campaign.

 

Mr. Jameson also reported on a dodge ball tournament that was recently held with

 

proceeds being donated to the Bread of Life.  He reported that they were able to donate

 

$150 and several cans of food.  Mr. Jameson reported that their fall blood drive had been

 

held today and they had 31 accepted donations.

 

There will be an Executive Session (Board Training) on Friday, November 11,

 

2011 and Saturday, November 12, 2011.  There will be a work session on Wednesday,

 

November 16, 201 at 6:00 p.m. at North Decatur Jr/Sr High School.  The next regular

 

Board Meeting will be on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at South Decatur Elementary

 

beginning at 5:30 p.m.

 

 

 

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned on a motion by


Todd Mauer and a second by Mark Young at 6:32 p.m.
