ur Elementary School principal Rob Smith is proud of the community service in which his students partake each year.
This fall, the students decided to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Decatur County with a penny war during Red Ribbon Week. The organization has a large impact on the school, as about 70 volunteers for the lunchtime AIM program travel over from the high school each week, in addition to volunteers from the community. Kara Muckerheide noted she has friends in the program who say its a lot of fun.
At the close of the penny war, the winning class, Mr. Hadler's, received a pizza party for bringing in the greatest sum of pennies. In all, the school raised $783.83.
Smith pointed out that the youngsters are very good about helping the community. In the past, he said, efforts have supported the Heart Association and New Directions. Currently, a canned food drive is underway to support the local food pantry.
"We appreciate what Big Brothers Big Sisters and Bev (Karaszia) bring to our school and our students," Smith said.
