Chautauqua Fall 2011

Student Radiothon for Haiti

On Friday October 28th from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Mr. Pratt’s Sociology class will hold a live Radiothon on WTRE 1330 AM. The goal of the event is to raise $2,000 for Pastor Beaufort Louis Juste’s Orphanage. Our students befriended this group after the Haitian earthquake. Their home/school was destroyed, killing 28 children. The sixteen surviving children were left with nothing, and because of the immensity of the disaster, no relief agencies could help them. Student fund-raising efforts kept this group of Haitian children alive. The bond between the two groups has been continuous, and now our students are trying to raise enough funds so the orphanage can build a water filtration system. They still live in tents, but the need for clean water and avoiding cholera is their greatest need.

Guests during the event will include Pastor Beaufort from Haiti, who will tell of their miraculous survival journey. His children, who now total nearly 50, will be singing us a song on the air. Also joining us will be Heather Greenwell from Dr. Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots organization, with whom we partner with in these humanitarian endeavors.

Students are currently soliciting businesses for auction items and to be a sponsor of the event ($50 or $100). During the event there will be two unique auctions of which you can participate in now. Student artists will be creating unique jack-o-lanterns that week that will be displayed at the station and auctioned off that day. The other activity will be a dedication auction. Here is how it will work: beginning now, you can place a bid on the opportunity to have a reading or musical selection dedicated to you or whomever you would like. The celebrities will call in live during the show. For example, Senator Bob Dole will call in at a pre-arranged time. A student answering the phone will give him the winning dedication, and then he will be piped in live. He will say this patriotic passage is dedicated to John Doe, a true American who fought bravely for his country, from his granddaughter Jane. Live musical guests such as Charlie Daniels will be on-hand as well. Those who have agreed to appear so far are:
